Medakafish Photoreceptors
It is suggested that medakafish brain (pineal organ) and melanosites recognize photons as well as the eye.
Medakafish photoreceptor cells in the eye
Section of fry medaka head
The photoreceptor cells of medaka are morphologically distinguishable as principle and accessory members of double cones, long single cones and short single cones. Rods and cones play roles in twilight and daylight vision, respectively. Cone photoreceptors are arranged in a square mosaic pattern.
Each photoreceptor produces a photoreceptor type-specific visual pigment, which have sensitive to photon with different wavelength. It is highly suggestive that there is a mechanism to express only one visual pigment gene and to suppress others.
